Recently, the international news were full of the ‘House of Horrors’ in Austria where a father, Josef Fritzl, imprisoned his daughter for 24 years in a cell underneath the house he live with his wife, Rosemarie, and fathered 7 children with his daughter, Elisabeth.
The poor Elisabeth was raped repeatedly and to make it worse, her children born of incest were locked in with her underground with no contact to the outside world. Fortunately, three of their children were brought above ground and brought up as normal children as the Fritzl’s grandchildren…well, they are sort of.
The whole thing was exposed when one of the children underground fell very ill and Fritzl had no choice but bring the girl to the hospital. The rest, as they say, is history. You can read the latest update of this news here: Josef Fritzl will plead insanity to dodge prison
When I first came across this news I was disgusted and then furious. It looks like incompetence in the police force is not only confined to Malaysia but to countries like Austria too! The poor girl had run away when she was younger due to being raped by her father but instead of protecting her, the police caught her and brought her back. They should have checked the reasons for her to run instead of returning her back to the monster who is her father.
Fritzl is not human and does not deserve to be treated so well as to be imprisoned. Free board and room with daily ‘recreational hour’ outside is not just punishment! He should be given the same treatment he gave his daughter and the three children who were confined in the dungeon for so many years.
Heck, he should be caned (by that, I meant the way they rotan our criminals here not the mere smack on the wrist over there), doused in honey and covered in fire ants. His rotan wounds should be rubbed with salt. And after that, he should be drawn and quartered, a popular form of punishment back in the ancient European times.
That aside, the wife and the neighbours should also bear part of the blame. Nobody questioned what was inside the secret cellar. One of the neighbours knew that Elisabeth was raped by her father and that’s why she had run away but did not alert the police. The wife, well, how could she not know what is happening right under her very nose? Perhaps she was too afraid of this monster. Still, why didn’t she do anything when her daughter went missing? Why she didn’t try to seek her out instead of believing what her husband said?
Do remember, this is a man with previous convictions of sexual related crimes. The man should have been locked away permanently in the first place!
What has this world come to that there are monsters like this living in normal society as if nothing is wrong. Something must be done to rid the world of such monsters. Punishment is all well and find but what about prevention?
Could this be due to the modern thinking of staying out of the business of your neighbours to the extent that they could commit murder and you won’t care as long as they don’t dump the body in your backyard?
Perhaps it is time we revert back to our old traditional kampung lifestyle, where everyone knows everyone’s affairs and if something was amiss, everyone knows about. Sure, some may construe it as being ‘kaypoh’ but kaypoh-ness has its benefits! At least it keeps people in check as they know the neighbours are watching and a wrong step would means it would be broadcasted to the world.

yeah, i was disgusted too when i first read the news. this is beyond comprehension. no human will ever do such evil things to another human being lest to your own flesh & blood. sick!
