I am not all that proud to be Malaysian

It is oft said that Malaysians should be proud of our multicultural diversity and how we can live together in peace and harmony despite our differences.

Well, I am not in the least proud. There is nothing to be proud of. Sure, there’s peace and harmony. For now. Racial tension still do run high amongst certain racial groups. And these are fan by the politicians for their own benefit. They don’t care that the people are unhappy and starting to resent each other just because of different skin colours.

And yes, I absolutely agree with Malaysiakini that racism still haunts the nation after 51 years of nationhood. This is no thanks to our politicians and I am not only referring to the ruling party. I am referring to ALL politicians, although the ruling party is more to be blamed than others.

For so long now, they’ve been using the racial card in all of their agenda. They use it to make themselves look good, they use it to make other parties look bad, they use it to make themselves seem important and yes, they use it to convince the people that they did well in looking out for everyone.

But what the hell has race got to do with anything? What has it got to do with how they run the country? What has it got to do with how they manage the country’s resources to benefit the people? What has it got to do with eradicating poverty, ensuring 100% literacy and employment? What has it got to do with developing the country and providing a stable economy for the people?

And what has it got to do with providing a clean and pollutant free country for the people? Or ensuring each family has a roof over their heads, their children the opportunity to go to school and they have enough to survive?

Really. Why does race need to be brought in at all? Why can’t there be policies to help the people, Malaysians, instead of any specific race?

Poverty and diseases does not discriminate and choose only a certain race. So, why should the politicians harp on racial issues to seem as if they are sincere in helping the people?

I once saw a documentary that proved that children are ‘colour blind’, as in they do not differentiate people by the skin tone. It is only when they get older that through environment and the people around them that taught them ‘racism’.

Malaysia has always prided itself to be multicultural and multiracial country but due to its politicians and leaders, it is probably also the most racist country in the whole world.

Why else would the filling of a simple form (for anything) would require the applicant to state his race and religion? Does the colour of the skin and the faith of the person really matter at all?

“Some of our leaders use religion to divide and rule,” said Navaratnam. “Race and religion can  go hand in hand. But our  leaders must stand for all and  promote better religious harmony. Not all do and that is the sad thing.”

- Malaysiakini

Yes. It is sad.

What is the point of celebrating the 51st Merdeka tomorrow when we have failed to be a united country where the people (and politicians) can look beyond skin tone and religious believes?

  • Aku menangis pada Hari Merdeka.
(I am Crying on Merdeka (Independence) Day.)

    1. Aku menangis kerana rakyat Malaysia telah hilang kegembiraan dan perasaan terhadap masa hadapan negara yang diimpiankan dan tidak seperti semasa Allahyarham Tunku Abdul Rahman melaungkan “Merdeka!”.

(I cry because Malaysians have lost the joy and hope of a future Malaysia as wished for unlike the times when the late Tunku Abdul Rahman shouted “Merdeka”. )

(I cry thinking of some Malaysians who talk, think and act to divide the citizens with their own racists and religious thoughts without a care for nationalism and friendships.)

    3. Aku menangis memikirkan ada rakyat Malaysia yang lebih mementingkan sendiri dari negara apabila timbul isu-isu parti, jawatan, habuan, kuasa, kawan, kesahabatan dan keadilan.

(I cry thinking of some Malaysians who care more of themselves rather than the Nation when it comes to issues of party, posts, rewards, power, friends, relationship and fairness.)

    4. Aku menangis memikirkan ada rakyat dan keluarga mereka yang masih belum mendapat keadilan sewaktu dipenjarakan, ditindas, dirompak, diugut, didiskriminasikan dan tidak juga dibenarkan bersuara.

(I cry thinking of some citizens and their families who have not obtain justice while being imprisoned, oppressed, robbed, threatened, discriminated and not even allowed the freedom of speech.)

    5. Aku menangis memirkirkan ada rakyat Malaysia yang masih hidup Kias Pagi, Makan Pagi; Kias Petang Makan Petang walaupun Malaysia sudah 50 tahun merdeka.

(I cry thinking there are still Malaysians who still live from Hand to Mouth everyday, even though Malaysia has already achieved 50 years of Independence.)

  • What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us.

    Merdeka had gone
    Celebrated got the freedom
    In 1957

    Now it should be different
    It should be National Day
    For all Malaysians

    Why keep harping on Merdeka?
As it is now race relation is poorly managed
Politicians always sing to their race
Rules and divides on racial composition
What so great to celebrate Merdeka?

    When races can identify
    They are Malaysians
Truly then we have come home
    Years after of 1957
The fabric of national unity has gone
Only amongst the young ignorant eyes
We see the hope of national integration

    The current issues
    Race still rocks our minds
Haven’t we learned it all these years?
    Only change the government
Maybe we will have a new light
    To celebrate our independence day

  • Foong

Hi everyone: thanks for the comments…I’ve been busy with the making of mooncakes so sorry lar, I couldn’t reply one by one…

  • Totally Unhappy

For the first time in my life, I don,t feel proud to be a malaysian. See, I even use small letter for malaysian. There is no more trust with these so called “leaders”. They are just a pack of wolves going for blood to satisfied their pangs for more power and money. They just want to hang on to the power in whatever way they can think off, even how stupid they look. This is SEMUA BOLEH LAND. I just wish the almighty will strike them down to prove that there is still some goodness in this world, whatever left of it. These leaders are really “half-baked”
