Amidst all this hype over the Permatang Pauh by-election, it looks like this year’s Merdeka celebrations had taken a back seat.
Think about it. The media are too busy with political news and all. Many people are talking about Anwar Ibrahim’s bid to get back into parliament which he succeeded.
And the anniversary of our independence are forgotten. Slipped the mind.
Hmmm…whatever happened to the ‘kibarkan jalur gemilang’ thing?
Or the Merdeka song being played repeatedly on TV till you feel like throwing a chair at it?
Or the many flag-covered vehicles blocking the views of other drivers on the road.
Or the flag-wearing people who happens to think fashioning clothes out of our national flag is a great fashionable item during Merdeka month.
Or the sight of lots of Jalur Gemilang being put up everywhere and left to the elements until most are blackened with soot, in tatters and become total disgrace rather than the symbol of pride.
Or all the hype about remembering our independence day
Or the repeated reminders of what the stupid BN government did to help us in the past half century.
Or the countless touchy-feely tears inducing ads on TV
Or the tonnes of Merdeka-themed posters, flyers, promotions, sales, events, whatever
Hmmm…Seems like Anwar Ibrahim is much much bigger than Merdeka huh? Oh well. The PM plans to ruin our Merdeka celebrations anyway (yep, even more than the Avril Lavigne concert) with the announcement of budget on Friday.
We all know it’s not going to be a great wonderful budget to help us manage the rising costs of living. Don’t hold your breath for sweets and goodies. Remember, the by-election is over, the general election is over and he is handing over in two years’ time.
Unless…
He truly believe in Anwar’s version of Merdeka (his campaign in Permatang Pauh) which is to wrest the government from BN. Then, he may feel obliged to hand out more goodies to the MPs whom they probably already know are thinking of hopping.
Well, I think it is time for Merdeka to be underway, don’t you? It is about time.
Eh, I am talking our 51 years independence day celebrations lar. What are you thinking?
