Mooncakes are supposed to look like the moon, right? Well, I have successfully baked a batch of mooncakes that look EXACTLY like the moon, complete with craters and rocks and misshapen thingies. Am I a genius baker or what?
Just feast your eyes on my absolutely unique, never seen before, first in the whole world (and some say Mars and the moon too), totally unbelievable MOONcakes that replicates the exact shapes of moonrocks!

TA DAH!!
Hah. Didn’t expect that did you? Or maybe you did.
I absolutely did the weird shaped mooncakes on purpose. Really. Seriously. Don’t you think it is much, much cooler, different, unique than those boring mooncakes shaped by moulds?
Let’s go freehand shaping, that’s what I say!
Okay, okay. So, I used the mould and somehow, this time around, I miscalculated and didn’t add enough flour so the end result was too lembik (soft) dough and ‘melting’ shapes which ended up like that after baked…
I managed to rectify it for the third batch..
Sigh. Looks like I am destined not to make boring mooncakes. My mooncakes have to be excitingly different, like pus-covered chocolate mooncakes (which tasted heavenly regardless, I tell you!) and now, moonrocks-shaped mooncakes. You definitely can’t buy this at any of those mooncakes stalls. No other shop or stall will be able to produce such amazingly unique mooncakes as mine!
Anyway, I also tried my hands at the Ping Pei Mooncakes (non-bake) and sadly, it came out looking like this…
Yeah, it does look kinda boring compared to my baked mooncakes, huh? In case you are wondering, the brown ones are chocolate flavoured while the top left is strawberry flavoured and the bottom right is the pandan flavoured.
I used three types of fillings for all my mooncakes (separately, not all in one lar. ). So, I have mooncakes with chocolate filling, white lotus paste filling and cheese filling. The cheese is mainly for the non-bake while the other two filling, I used for both baked and non-bake.
Now I have about 40 mooncakes (small and medium sizes). Half of which are the non-bake and the other half are the moonrocks baked mooncakes.
I wonder if anyone would notice if I give them the misshapen mooncakes? Any ideas how to make those interesting shapes not so noticeable, anyone?
p/s: By making my own mooncakes, the costs are:
small mooncake – RM2.50 each
medium mooncake – RM3.50 each
time – irreplaceable
experience – priceless
So, yeah, I may just bake more mooncakes……next year! Oh, do check out the recipes I used in making my mooncakes in my food blog these few days…

I buy my mooncakes after the festival. Usually can get 30% off. Sometimes half even half price.
But I will not buy from the road side hawkers and pasar malams. They may look good on the outside but taste bloody terrible.
If the budget can stand it I buy the lotus paste with twin yolks. But if the budget is a bit strectched I buy the black “Tao Sar”. My favourite is the century old egg with pickle ginger and in lotus paste. Beautiful, you got sweet, sour and salty flavours exploding in your mouth.
However, old age is creeping up and my GP does not advise I eat too much suger.
Moon cakes
Shapes and sizes
Curry favors from the eyes
‘Don’t you saliva it for me?’
It isn’t about shapes and sizes
Moon cakes should melt the mouths
Of adults and children
So next year and years after that
Moon cakes dancing for the eyes
I enjoy moon cakes
Years ago when the cost was low
Now I can’t go splashing it
With nice boxes quality poor
It isn’t worth the money
It has lost its quality
Now look for homemade moon cakes
Where the original taste can be made
No more commercialization it
It is back to its origin
Moon cakes
The battle of minds and wits
Of history of oppression
It never ends
p/s do you make to sell too?
Give those interesting shape ones to me lar !!
I shall eat them happily and your problem is solved.
Who want to share with me?
I usually don’t buy mooncakes,… too expensive. Prefer to eat ice cream. When the festival is over (after the 15th. day), many of my friends would be begging ‘wan mooncakes or not?… I have too many, cannot finish ….. people give one’That’s when I eat mooncakes ….. hahaha ….. free some more!
Those who have elderly parents and in-laws will most times end up with many many mooncakes after the festival because relatives would come by to give these cakes to celebrate the festival and honor the elderly. But they are too sweet(even the reduced sugar types) for the old folks. Can suggest give ang-pows or not?
I don’t make mooncakes – too much work! But if you don’t want your interesting shaped mooncakes, give them to me – I don’t care about the shape as long as they taste good!
So the cost of medium mooncakes is RM3.50 each, now I know how much those selling mooncakes earn when they sell them at exorbitant price of RM10 and above!
I normally buy mooncakes one day before and one day after Mooncake Festival Day. Sure cheaper, but maybe the good varieties gone.

engineer: that’s why I make my own lor…can control sugar and make sure it’s not so sweet and cheap too!
caravanserai: I wish I could bake to sell but no skills lar. Just look at the ‘interesting ones’ I’ve made so far…people see my mooncakes sure run for the hills wan.
Momo: how true. I usually end up with a lot of mooncakes too and most of it end up on my hips!
Now, got so many ‘interesting’ home made mooncakes, I think my hips will become wider than the real moon!
Eh, you sure you want those moonrockcakes? Not sked of food poisoning ar?
foongpc: after struggling to make the mooncakes, I can tell you they sell so expensive because of the time factor.
It takes about 16 hours to prepare and bake about 15 mooncakes and about 4 hours to make the non-bake mooncakes. Not easy lar.So the commercial price usually takes into account the time and efforts lor. Time is money mah.
Wah, u also want my weird shaped mooncakes ar? Not sked of food poisoning meh?
