Embarrasing pregnancy-related bodily functions

When you get knocked up (or to put it politely, pregnant), your body will undergo a lot of changes. So much so it has become literally another person’s body. Your appetite change. Your size change. Your mood change. Even your features undergo slight changes. So, you get loads of pregnancy-related symptoms.

But nothing is worse than all those embarrassing bodily functions that goes with it. Ever wonder why, other than looking like a Goodyear blimp, you are also struck with horribly embarrassing conditions? Well, here are some of the conditions I can think of that you could lessen and make it less horrifyingly embarrassing.

  • You find yourself burping loudly a lot (or the air coming out the other way) – that’s mostly due to a build-up of gas in your stomach and this could start even in the first semester. Remember, you are facing loads of hormonal changes and one of the more common changes is how your stomach works and you are suddenly beset with loads of gas. How to avoid it? Eat more frequent small meals like munching on dry crackers or drinking warm milk to ensure your stomach is not empty for too long to build up too much gas. And yes, avoid gassy food like beans and such.  But if you do burp or fart loudly, oh well, make sure you are either in the ladies’ or in a big huge noisy crowd. Otherwise, act innocent and pretend it’s not you.
  • You get stress incontinence (or leak urine when you sneeze, cough, laugh loudly) – this is due to the pressure of the baby against your bladder. If it’s your second or third baby, then it may be worse as your muscles down there are pretty lax and more susceptible to incontinence. There’s only one way to solve this: DO YOUR KEGELS! Don’t know what’s that? It means doing some muscle strengthening muscles down there. Just imagine yourself holding in your urine when peeing, that’s how you control the muscles. So, contract and release these muscles a several times a day every day and it will help loads to strengthen the muscles. Just don’t do it while peeing as it’s not good to try to hold in your urine all the time.

  • You find yourself waddling instead of walking properly - this happens when the baby is big and you are nearing in your final trimester. There's nothing much you can do except to bear through it. After all, the baby is almost here!! However, you can always do some light back strengthening exercises (after getting your doctor to okay it) so that your back will be more supportive and you don't need to waddle that much.
  • Your face and hair is constantly oily and you are having loads of acne out of a sudden - some people do experience this and I am one of them. I normally don't get acne but the moment I conceived, I'd get a break out of acne. So, what do I do to control it? Well, I invest in some really good facial products to cleanse, moisturise and protect the skin and heal the scars. Other than that, we'll just have to wait for the hormones to settle down after the baby comes.
  • You throw up at the most inconvenient of times - this is what we call morning sickness and there's nothing we can do about it. Of course, the doctor can always prescribe you some medication to reduce the effects but I always believed that it is better we reduce the intake of any medication when pregnant, no matter how safe it is for the baby. Do remember, whatever you consume, the baby gets traces of it too. Other more natural ways of controlling morning sickness includes munching on dry salted crackers, eating pickles and drinking hot lemon tea. Also avoid foods that makes you nauseous.  If it doesn't help at all, you just have to bear with it until the second trimester.

I am now almost going into my third trimester. Darn. Time sure do flies and I have yet to unpack the old baby stuffs!! So many things to do, so little time....
